This PGD allows for the provision of Atovaquone/Proguanil Hydrochloride 250 mg/100 mg Film-coated tablets (Malarone®), doxycycline 50 mg and 100mg capsules and mefloquine 250 mg tablets (Lariam®). Anti-malarials are generally not provided on the NHS and so for most, the only way to obtain these medicines is with a private prescription,or  increasingly via travel services operating  PGDs in a community pharmacy, or other locations.

Why these PGD

There is no universal method of obtaining anti-malarial medication in the UK, with the majority of provisions not available on the NHS.   The Malaria (atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline and mefloquine) PGDs allow  the supply of these medicines directly to their customers without the need for a doctor's prescription. There is an estimated 2 to 3 million antimalarial prescriptions per year in the UK alone, giving these PGDs a large potential market. We offer a comprehensive training pack to offer travel health services.

Who is this for?

Doxycycline: Patients over 12 years of age;

Mefloquine: Over 3 months of age;

Atovaquone plus Proguanil: Patients, over 40 kg in weight

Atovaquone plus Proguanil Paediatric: Children, and adult patients under 40 kg in weight

This PGD service is only available to healthcare professionals .
